Why Convert JPG to AVIF?

JPG has carried the web's photos for thirty years, and it still works fine. AVIF just does it better.

At matched visual quality an AVIF runs commonly around 50 percent smaller than the JPG, which adds up fast across a gallery or a product page where every image loads on its own. Google serves AVIF in image results now too, so there's no ranking reason left to keep large photos on JPG.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting JPG to AVIF add quality loss?
Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding always costs a little. At a high AVIF quality the difference is hard to see, and the file is still much smaller than the source JPG. Keep the original if you may re-edit later.
Why does the AVIF take a moment to encode?
AVIF compression does more work than JPG or WebP, so encoding is slower by design. That trade buys the smaller file. The converter runs the AV1 encoder in a background worker so the tab stays responsive.
Is AVIF better than WebP for photos?
Generally yes on file size, by roughly 20 to 30 percent at equal quality for photographic content. WebP still has slightly wider browser support, so the honest answer is to serve AVIF with a WebP fallback.
Can I set the output quality?
The converter targets a high-quality AVIF that stays visually close to the source. For pixel-level control over the quality knob and batch presets, the desktop app exposes the full encoder settings.
Is this conversion free, and is my file private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. The only limit is size: 25 MB for this format. Bigger files route to the desktop app.
