A PDF lands in Mail or Messages and something in it is wrong. A misspelled name, last month's date, an amount that changed after the file was made.
So you open it in Files, tap the Markup pen, and find the tools are a highlighter, a pen and a text box. All three draw on top of the page. The wrong words are still in the file underneath, one copy and paste away from being read back.
This is the part Markup was never for. Tap the line, type the correction, save the file. The old text comes out of the document rather than getting covered, and the replacement is matched to the original size and font so nothing shifts.
How to edit a PDF on iPhone

It opens full screen, right in Safari. There is no app to install and nothing is uploaded.

Every line of text is outlined. Zoom in, tap the one to change, and type over it. The font bar shows it matched the letter's own font, Georgia, at the same size.

Which PDFs can be edited?
If you can select the words in the PDF, the editor can usually find them and let you change them. Exported invoices, contracts, forms and reports are all fine.
Scans are the exception. A scanned page is a photograph of text, so there is nothing to select. The editor says so plainly instead of pretending. TeraConvert for Mac reads scans with built-in OCR when you convert them.
How do I edit a PDF on iPhone?

Can I change text that's already in a PDF?

Why can't I edit the text in Markup?
Because Markup is an annotation tool. Its highlighter, pen and text box all draw a new layer over the page, and the original words stay in the file underneath. Nothing you can do in Markup removes them. The editor on this page rewrites the text itself.

Can I fix a typo in a PDF when I don't have the original file?
Yes, and that is usually why people are here. The editor works on the PDF itself, so you do not need the Word or Pages file it came from, or the machine it was made on.
Is putting a white box over the wrong text good enough?
Only if nobody looks. A white rectangle hides the old words on screen and leaves them in the file, so they still come out with copy and paste or a text search. Retyping the line removes them, and the redact tool deletes rather than covers.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Your file is never sent to TeraConvert or to a server for editing. It is opened and rewritten on your phone.
Is it safe to edit private PDFs this way?
That is the point of building it this way. A contract, a payslip or a client file never leaves your iPhone. You can even switch off your connection once the page has loaded and keep editing.
What happens to the layout when I retype a line?
The editor reads the original font, size, and colour and writes your replacement in an open font with the same letter widths, so nothing shifts or reflows. You can set the font, size, and colour by hand if you prefer.

Do I need Adobe Acrobat?
No. Acrobat is not involved anywhere on this page, and neither is a monthly bill.
