Changelog

• Opening Pages on a multi-page PDF quit the app. It started a render for every page at once and the PDF engine tore itself down mid render.
• Page thumbnails load faster and read a fraction of the memory. They were being rendered at eight times the size they are drawn at.

Converting

• GIFs now export at 720px and 15fps by default. A 7 second screen recording that used to come out at 19 MB is 1.2 MB.
• If you set a size in the video editor yourself, that still wins. The default only applies when you have not picked one.
• The GIF colour palette is tuned for screen recordings, so the colours go where things actually move. Same size and framerate, 3.7 MB down to 2.9 MB.

Video editor

• The crop box lines up with the video. It used to sit on the whole preview area, black bars included, so the rectangle never matched the pixels you got.
• Zoom in the Crop tab, up to 8x, scroll to pan. Putting an edge exactly where you wanted it on a 4K file was guesswork before.

The Mac app

• Settings, Minimize animations now does what it says. It used to change one thing inside the settings pane and nothing else in the app.
• Buttons respond when you press them. There was almost no press feedback anywhere, so a click could read as though it had not registered.
• Dialogs fade in instead of appearing in a single frame. That includes the crop, audio, video and document editors.

Web

• Pages are lighter. The logo used to ship inside every page as text, four copies per response. A conversion page went from 108 KB to 22 KB over the wire.
• The founder note is one short note now instead of eight paragraphs, and it reads the same on the web and in the app.
• If your system asks for reduced motion, the scrolling rows on the site stop too. They were the one thing still moving.

Converting

• Copy a converted file straight to the clipboard from the output card. Text, SVG and image outputs all copy, so a quick result never has to become a file.
• Pressing play on a file the app can show but not decode no longer throws an error. It says it cannot play that format and leaves the conversion alone.
• Long files read in hours. A 2 hour 14 minute video shows 2:14:29 instead of 134:29 on the playhead, in the trim fields and in the length.

PDF editor

• Retyped text keeps the size the page actually renders. Lines exported from Word came back visibly larger than their neighbours before this.
• Drag the corner of a text box to resize it, with the point size shown live while you drag.
• Pinch to zoom and pan with one finger on a touch screen. Ctrl or Cmd plus scroll zooms with a mouse.
• Text squeezed horizontally is read only now, the same rule rotated text already followed, because a retyped copy cannot reproduce the squeeze.

Previews

• The fullscreen viewer closes when you click outside the document. Escape and the close button still work.
• Scrolling in the fullscreen viewer is smoother. The page behind it is no longer redrawn on every frame.
• Preview scrollbars are thin and rounded instead of the fat default bar poking through the corner of the card.

Web

• The phone home page has one button: convert a file. The install offer moved to after your first conversion, where it has earned the tap.
• The video editor, the format picker and the file card fit a phone screen. The picker no longer opens the keyboard by itself.
• The download button on the dashboard stopped clipping its own label on a narrow screen.

• Fixed the PDF editor sitting on "Opening document" forever. The engine was blocked by the app's own security policy; every PDF now opens for editing.
• If the editor engine ever fails to start, it now says so after 30 seconds instead of spinning forever.

PDF editing

• Click any line of text in a PDF and retype it. The old words are removed from the file, not covered with a box.
• The replacement font, size, and colour are matched from the line you clicked. Arial becomes Arimo, Times becomes Tinos, Calibri becomes Carlito.
• Override the matched font, the size in points, and the colour with a picker while the line is open.
• Click empty space to add text in the style of the nearest line.
• One Edit surface now: text editing, highlight, draw, rectangle, signature, and redact share a single toolbar. Edit text is the default tool.
• Table cells on the same line edit independently, so fixing a value no longer rewrites the whole row.
• Every text box carries visible save and cancel buttons. Cmd+Z undoes, Delete removes a selected annotation.
• Rectangles draw as outlines instead of solid blocks, and annotations can finally be deleted.
• The editor opens fitted to the window width instead of zoomed out.

Web

• New PDF editor pages at teraconvert.com/pdf-editor and /pdf-editor-mac, running the same editor in the browser with nothing uploaded.
• Scrolling a PDF to its end no longer scrolls the page behind the editor.
• The installed web app has its own app shell with Convert, Tools, and Account tabs, and works offline.
• The site footer slimmed from 73 links to four short columns.

• The Apple Silicon download now opens without Gatekeeper rejecting the disk image.

Converting

• Video, audio, image OCR and PDFs now work the moment you open the app. TeraConvert ships its own copies of FFmpeg, Tesseract, qpdf and pdfium.
• The setup screen that asked you to install eight programs is gone. Office files, e-books and a few document formats still need a one-time download, offered when a file actually needs one.
• Markdown, HTML and text convert to PDF with real text you can select and search, including math, diagrams and highlighted code.
• A scanned PDF converts to text on its own. No more converting it to images first.
• PDFs open in a real editor: highlight, whiteout, draw, add notes and shapes, sign, and redact for real rather than painting a black box over words that stay in the file.
• Read any document full screen before you save it.

Fixes

• Converting a PDF to PDF no longer re-encodes it when you did not ask for compression, which used to paint a block over highlights.
• A file that yields no text now fails honestly instead of saving an empty one.
• The tool notice sits beside the output rather than above the page.

• Drop a file and an arrow swings to the format list, then to the output panel, then to Convert.
• A second arrow points at the edit button when your file can be cropped or trimmed first.
• The arrows leave for good once you've converted. Once per install on the Mac, until your first conversion on the web.
• New AI text cleaner at teraconvert.com/ai-text-cleaner. It strips zero width spaces, curly quotes and stray markdown from chatbot answers.
• Every cleaning rule is a switch, it counts what it fixed, and it keeps working with your connection off.
• Browser audio runs on one engine. Fades no longer load a second converter before anything happens.

• Trim by dragging the film strip itself. Grab an edge to set start and end, drag the middle to slide the selection.
• Click anywhere on the strip to jump there. The part you're cutting stays dimmed.
• Arrow keys nudge a tenth of a second, and the start and end boxes still take a typed time.
• Every editor used to close and lose your edit if you released a handle outside the window. Fixed in video, crop, audio and documents.
• Buying Pro on the web unlocks the app as soon as you switch back, instead of waiting for the next daily check.

• Buying Pro is one click. The middle screen that asked you to sign in a second time is gone.
• Already signed in without Pro? The button goes straight to pricing.
• Redesigned the note about why I built this. It ran taller than a default window, so the button sat below the fold.
• The note says what you're paying for up front instead of burying it under the story.

• Video batches run several files at once. 5.1 GB of footage, 63 minutes, went from 142 seconds to 38.
• Dropped Apple's hardware encoder. On a minute of 4K60 it wrote 158 MB in 47 seconds; software wrote 56 MB in 15, at better quality.
• Medium quality stopped forcing a full re-encode, so a container swap stays a container swap.
• Some files come out bigger, because quality tracks what's in the picture instead of a fixed number.
• A long batch leans on your CPU where it used to lean on the media engine. Expect more heat and less battery.
• Batch output lands in the folder you picked in Settings again. In 0.5.19 it went to a temp folder.
• Cancel stops every file still running, not just the first one it finds.
• Cmd+V works on the drop zone, so screenshots skip the trip through Finder.
• Subtitle and chapter tracks stopped riding into mp4 files as unreadable data.

• Drop forty photos in and the list stays smooth. It builds small previews and reads each file once instead of twenty times.
• Cancel stops a batch partway. Whatever finished stays finished, the rest go back to waiting.
• Converting to OGG picks an encoder your FFmpeg actually has. Homebrew ships it without Vorbis.
