Why Convert MOV to GIF?

An iPhone MOV clip is fine until you need it looping silently in a chat thread, a README, or a Slack message, where a GIF just plays and a video waits for a tap. This turns the clip into an autoplaying loop that works nearly everywhere.

Keep it short: GIF tops out at 256 colors and has no real video compression, so length inflates the file fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my GIF larger than the original MOV?
GIF has no efficient video compression and caps at 256 colors, so it is a wasteful way to store motion. A three-second clip can outweigh the source MOV. Trimming to a couple of seconds keeps the file sane.
What frame rate should I use?
10 to 15 fps reads as smooth motion without ballooning the file. The output card has an FPS slider (5 to 30) so you can trade smoothness against size.
Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?
The 256-color ceiling is the cause. Smooth gradients and skin tones band because the palette simply cannot hold enough shades. It is a limit of the format, not the conversion.
Can I trim the MOV before converting?
Yes. Open the video editor (sliders icon) and set a trim range first. Shorter clips make smaller, better-looking GIFs.
Is this conversion free, and is my file private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. Files up to 500 MB convert here, limited to 3 conversions per day on this path; the desktop app has neither cap.
