Help
Everything you need to install, set up, and get unstuck. Files never leave your device.
Install on your Mac
Download the .dmg from the download page, open it, and drag TeraConvert into your Applications folder. The app is built for macOS on Apple Silicon (M1 and later).
The app is signed and notarized. On first launch macOS shows a standard confirmation, so click Open. If macOS says the app cannot be checked, right-click the app in Applications and choose Open once. It opens normally every time after that.
Install conversion tools
Images and many documents work out of the box using the tools built into macOS. Video, audio, office, ebook, and OCR formats use open-source engines (FFmpeg, ImageMagick, Pandoc, Ghostscript, qpdf, Tesseract, LibreOffice, Calibre) that install through Homebrew.
The app installs each engine in one click from Setup or Settings. It runs in the background and retries your conversion automatically when the tool finishes. If Homebrew is not on your Mac yet, install it from brew.sh first, then come back and install the tool you need.
Troubleshooting
A conversion failed. What now?
First press Retry, since most failures are a tool that was still installing. Open Technical details on the error card to see which engine ran, then check that its tool is installed under Settings. If it fails again with the same file, the source may be corrupt, so try another file to narrow it down.
My file is too large on the free tier.
The free tier converts one file at a time within size caps: images up to 25 MB, video up to 500 MB, audio up to 100 MB, and PDFs up to 100 MB. Pro removes these caps and adds batch conversion. Sign in to start a 7-day trial of Pro and test your file first.
A format is not supported in the browser.
The website converts 200+ pairs in the browser, which covers the common ones. The desktop app handles 800+ supported conversions using native engines, so formats like HEIC, AIFF, and EPUB route there. When you drop such a file on the website, it points you to the desktop app for that job.
OCR is missing words from my scan.
The built-in OCR reads printed text and clean layouts well. Handwriting, stylized fonts, and dense multi-column pages fall outside what it targets, so results there are partial. For higher accuracy on difficult scans, the desktop app runs Tesseract with more language packs.
The app will not open on first launch.
The app is signed and notarized, so first launch shows a standard macOS confirmation where you click Open. If macOS says it cannot check the app, right-click TeraConvert in Applications and choose Open once. macOS remembers your choice and opens it normally after that.
How do I update?
The desktop app checks for updates on launch and every few hours, then installs them in the background. You can also open Settings and choose Check for Updates to update right away. Updates are free for everyone, on every tier.
Keyboard shortcuts
These shortcuts work in the desktop app.
| ⌘O | Open a file |
|---|---|
| ⌘↩ | Start conversion |
| ⌘, | Open Settings |
| Esc | Stop the current conversion |

Uninstall
Quit the app, then drag TeraConvert from Applications to the Trash. Tools you installed through Homebrew stay in place because they are standard system packages you may use elsewhere. Remove any you no longer want with brew uninstall.
