Why Convert HEIC to JPG?

HEIC is Apple's default camera format since iOS 11, offering 40% better compression than JPG, but it is not natively supported on Windows, Android, most web services, or non-Apple software.

Converting to JPG gives universal compatibility across every device and platform while keeping the photo at near-identical visual quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my HEIC photos lose quality when converted to JPG?
At quality 90 or higher, JPG output is visually indistinguishable from HEIC for most photos. The HEIC compression is already lossy, so converting at high JPG quality adds minimal degradation.
Are HEIC Live Photos supported?
The browser converter extracts the still image from HEIC files. The motion video component of Live Photos is not extracted. TeraConvert Desktop handles HEIC batch conversion more completely.
Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
Apple adopted HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) in iOS 11 because it offers similar quality to JPG at about half the file size, saving storage on devices.
Can I change my iPhone to save JPG instead of HEIC?
Yes. In Settings > Camera > Formats, select 'Most Compatible' to save future photos as JPG instead of HEIC.
Is this conversion really free, and is my file private?
Yes. The browser conversion runs entirely on your device using WebAssembly. Files are never uploaded to a server and are discarded from memory when you close the page. There is no file size tracking, no account link to your upload, and no cloud storage.
Do I need to create an account to convert files?
No. The browser converter works without signing in. An optional account is only needed if you want to save favorites, track conversion history, or upgrade to the desktop app with Polar license activation.
How fast is the conversion?
Most browser conversions complete in a few seconds. Large files (over 100 MB) or heavy formats (video, high-page PDFs) take longer depending on your device's CPU and available memory. The desktop app runs significantly faster using native engines.
