Why Convert AVIF to JPG?

AVIF squeezes images smaller than just about anything else on the web, which is cold comfort when your photo editor, a CMS upload form, or someone's older browser flatly refuses to open the file. JPG has none of those problems; it opens everywhere, on everything, going back decades.

Converting hands you a file you can actually use, at the cost of the space AVIF was saving you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my AVIF file open?
AVIF is recent, and support is still uneven across older browsers, design tools, and OS image viewers. JPG works in all of them, which is the main reason to convert.
Will converting to JPG lose quality?
Most AVIF files on the web are already lossy, so converting to JPG at quality 90 or higher adds only minor extra degradation. Very subtle differences can appear because the two formats compress differently.
Does the JPG keep AVIF transparency?
No. JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent areas in the AVIF are flattened onto a solid background, usually white.
Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?
Usually, yes. AVIF is more efficient than JPG, so the converted file is often larger. You are trading file size for universal compatibility.
Is this conversion free, and is my file private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. The only limit is size: 25 MB for this format. Bigger files route to the desktop app.
