Why Convert JPEG to PNG?

JPEG and JPG are the same format wearing two different file extensions, and both discard a little detail every time they save. PNG is lossless, so once your image is a PNG, further edits and re-saves stop degrading it, and you pick up an alpha channel for a transparent background.

It will not undo the compression already baked into the JPEG, but it stops the losses from here on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JPEG different from JPG?
No. They are identical. JPEG is the full name of the format; JPG is the three-letter extension left over from old Windows file naming. The pixels and the codec are the same.
Will converting to PNG restore quality?
No. JPEG compression is lossy and permanent. PNG preserves whatever the JPEG currently contains without adding more loss, but it cannot recover detail that was already thrown away.
Why is my PNG larger than the JPEG?
PNG is lossless and stores pixel data more completely, so it is almost always bigger than the equivalent JPEG. That extra size is the cost of not losing anything further.
Does the PNG give me transparency?
The PNG has an alpha channel, but a JPEG has no transparency to carry over, so the background starts opaque. You can then erase areas to transparent in an image editor.
Is this conversion free, and is my file private?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser tab, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed. The only limit is size: 25 MB for this format. Bigger files route to the desktop app.
